Will the Scottish Shambles lead to a Labour Landslide?
Wednesday 15th May 2024
Over 17 years in ‘power’, the SNP has proven itself extraordinarily incompetent at governing. It is probably also corrupt and now seems incapable of holding together a coalition Government because of ineffectual leadership.
Add Hamza Yousaf’s resignation and the shoo-in of John Swinney to the SNP’s inability to deliver its primary purpose of an independent Scotland, and it will surely now lose voters in droves.
Most SNP policies have been to the left of the Labour Party and most of its dis-illusioned supporters will now go back to voting for Labour as they did in the 90’s. I suppose, some may vote for the Liberal Democrats or Green’s but certainly not the Tories!
In England, ‘Skier’s’ Labour Party appears to be shuffling towards a majority in the upcoming General Election, not because it inspires anyone or fills them with confidence but simply because it’s not the Tories, who have disgraced themselves in their 14-year tenure.
Up until this latest SNP debacle, there was some doubt about an absolute Labour majority in Westminster but with probably 25 Scottish seats coming back to them, a strong Labour majority in Westminster is now a virtual certainty.
So, what does this mean for property, I hear you yelling?!
Well, it has to be a plus that a minority Labour Govt. will not be held to ransom by a very left-wing band of SNP coalition partners.
The SNP have brought in some monumentally silly anti-landlord legislation in the last few years which have led to a significant exit of landlords from the market and very little incentive to build new properties, leading to sharp rises in rent and a general shortage of housing.
Labour under ‘Skier’ Starmer are not quite as silly as the SNP.
I don’t look forward to it particularly, but a ‘pure’ Labour Government will be better able to legislate for the UK in a less extreme way than if the SNP held the whip hand.
At this point, I welcome small mercies.
Until next time……
