It certainly isn’t a flat!
Recent research from YouGov and the OECD confirm what we all know. We English prefer to live in houses, rather than flats.
It is hardly news.
However, it is a problem if we are to resolve our housing shortages.
We need more dense housing in areas that people want to live and close to good infrastructure, rather than the urban sprawl that can be seen in the low-quality, soulless housing estates currently being banged up by the developers on the edges of towns.
There are a multitude of issues but my question today is – What would make flat-living more desirable?
Instinctively, I feel the answer may lie with having some outside space - both private and communal.
If I am right, then all new apartments should have a balcony to sit on. East-facing for coffee and croissant or West-facing for that post work G&T. Plus, a communal rooftop terrace with attractive planting and areas for seating and sun-bathing. What do you think? Answers to patrick@stanleypropertylondon.co.uk.
This was a recent favourite of mine with a terrace, which we have just successfully sold.
